Highest Pesticide Produce — The Dirty Dozen Ranked
Know where to focus your washing effort — and when to buy organic
The Environmental Working Group tests thousands of produce samples annually. These 12 items consistently show the most pesticide residues. For each one, we give you a pesticide load score, the best washing method, and an honest verdict on whether organic is worth it.
12 produce items — ranked by pesticide load
Higher scores = more pesticide residues detected. Red border = contains systemic pesticides that cannot be washed off.
About the pesticide load scores
Scores (1–10) are relative rankings based on EWG's composite analysis of USDA Pesticide Data Program results — they combine the number of pesticides detected, percentage of samples with residues, and concentration levels. They are not toxicity risk scores. A score of 10 means the highest relative residue burden; it does not mean the produce is unsafe to eat.
